Biographical Information My first name is Irina, in Roman means Peace. I am Irina Grebennik. I was born in Ukraine, grew up and spent my 21 years in the Far East of Russia, and now I am US citizen and live in Columbus, state of Ohio. 14 years ago I would not imagine that my next life adventure would make me to come by myself to the United States to follow my dreams come true. It is hard and rough but worthy to make your life and living in the different country. Finishing my second BFA degree in Arts and Fashion Design, working as a designer for 5 years in the retail industry, teaching surface and fashion classes as an adjunct faculty for 8 years at the Columbus College of Art and Design would keep pushing, encouraging me to find my own happiness, my true purpose and expression of life. Become an artist. To nurture my soul, my identity and learn how to express my feelings and questions, I found myself through manipulation of fabrics, use of mixed media and play of colors. Being as a college student, I was very involved into the Surface Design classes where I first met and learned applications of Shibori along with Discharge, Devore, Nuno Felting, Batik with Painting, and basic Silk Printing on Fabrics. I am humbled and captivated by nature’s patterns, texture and color transparency on fabrics. I find that human “unfolded memories” appear as creation and connection of habits and attitude patterns along with coded actions are, relate to Shibori patterns and have tight connection to our lives. In 2005 I had participated in the International Surface Design Association Conference, Kansas City and studied Shibori classes with Yoshiko Wada textile artist and well-known educator of Shibori, and Danish chemist Joy Boutrup. Along with traditional Shibori techniques I was exposed to modern ones such as: application of Shibori patterns on synthetic, mixed-media textiles, heat-setting and heat-transfer on polyester, fabric origami and sculpture, wool fulling and Shibori wool. The classes were intense with lots of knowledge and practice, and shifted my goals to learn and experiment deeply of manipulating fabrics with Shibori, sculpting and dyeing. My current art work of fabric development and fabric installations involve with modern techniques of natural and fabric blends with Shibori, Melt-off, Fulling, Nuno Felting and Silk Painting. As the part of the emerging artist, my pieces are presented as a part of CCAD Faculty biannual exhibition. Currently I teach Surface Design and Beginning Fashion Illustration classes at the Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus Ohio, hold studio practice and complete MFA in Art Education. My educational background is diverse and collaborated in art, design and teaching such as, degrees of BFA in teaching at the Vladivostok Teachers College in Russia, BFA in Fashion at the CCAD, Columbus OH, and currently finishing MFA in Art Education at the Phoenix University.
