QSDS 2024 Teachers

Julie Booth

Vienna, VA

Julie BoothI’m an artist, an author but most of all, I’m a teacher who loves to inspire my students to stretch. My greatest joy is watching students get excited, jump in fully and produce works that speak to them and others. I personally enjoy hours in the studio playing with fabric and threads but also painting and printing my own fabrics. I’m the author of Fabric Printing at Home (2014), a book that focuses on using household materials to create print blocks, stencils, and fabric resists. I’ve been a featured artist in three Quilting Arts TV series and continue to write articles for Quilting Arts magazine on hand stitching and surface design projects. I’m the proud initiator of the Textile Museum Muse Project (started in 2017), where I provide opportunities for textile artists to study ancient textiles and objects from the Textile Museum’s (in Washington DC) collections, using them as inspiration for new fiber art works. In 2020, I moved my teaching online. I teach workshops and classes in hand stitching as an expressive art medium as well as how to create beautiful, hand stitched art objects. In 2020 and 2022, I had the wonderful opportunity to teach lessons in hand stitching techniques for TextileArtist.org’s Stitch Club, a virtual community of 60,000 stitchers. I’m truly looking forward to sharing my love of hand stitching with members of QSDS!

Becky Hancock

Covington, KY

Becky Hancock

I have always loved and been fascinated by beads, buttons, baubles, embellishments and shiny , sparkly stuff! I would make jewelry from found objects and scrap jewelry, then sell them from my front porch to the neighborhood kids. Even though I wanted to become a marine biologist I was always consumed by making things with artsy-craftsy kinds of materials. So after realizing that I didn't have the love I needed for the math classes required for an MB, I succumbed to the world of Arts and Crafts, got a BS in Recreation Therapy from ASU and taught the world that you could work through any problem in your life as long as you took time to "Get Your Crafty On!" In 1994 I opened St Theresa’s Textile Trove with my sister, Terrie Mangat. We incorporated this philosophy into our mission statement!! We have heard many of our beloved artists and creative souls say that their “soul was saved” at St Theresa's"! So come---get your Mojo into Bodacious Gear!!

Katie Pasquini Masopust

Fortuna, CA

Katie Pasquini Masopust

For 40+ years Katie Pasquini Masopust has produced high quality contemporary art quilts that have been coveted and collected by a broad range of admirers. From her early beginnings as a painter dabbling in traditional quilt making, her work has evolved from structured Mandalas and mind-blowing dimensional pieces to very painterly landscapes executed with the finest fabrics and most creative stitching techniques. Katieʼs easy, energetic manner has made her a very popular teacher and lecturer. When not in residence at her studio in California she travels the world presenting her contemporary quilting theories and techniques to classes; not only in North America, but in Europe, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Awards and accolades have been numerous for Katie, culminating with her 2005 induction into a very select group of art quilt professionals who have earned the Silver Star Award presented by Houston Quilt Festival. A prolific author, Katie shares her enthusiasm for the art of creative quilting through her numerous books, her many classes, and now as executive director of Alegre Retreat held at Gateway Canyons Resort in Colorado - a destination resort for quilting enthusiasts and fiber artists.

Pat Pauly

Rochester, NY

Pat Pauly

With works that carry a graphic, color-saturated palette using her hand printed fabric, Pat Pauly’s fiber art is seen around the world. Her textile work began in the early 1980s and was first accepted in Quilt National ’83, and has continued being shown in major exhibitions. Her fiber art’s distinction is with using a strong abstraction of natural forms and complex color combinations. Her work is in both private and public collections. With a degree in art, and graduate work in design and fine art, Pat chose fiber art as the perfect amalgam of construction, painting and printmaking. She has taught throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia, in design and surface design. Her lectures are fast paced, funny, and often speak on the intersection of traditional quilt arts with contemporary fiber art. She brings the same pace and relaxed atmosphere to her workshops. Often seen in exhibitions, Pat’s work is also widely published, and she has appeared in Quilting Arts televised segments. If not teaching, she is found in her studio in Rochester, New York where she has the best advantage of being surrounded by great artists as well as the beauty of the Finger Lakes.

Irene Roderick

Austin, TX

Irene RoderickMy quilting activities are a mixture of discovery and elation. I have been an artist for most of my life (my parents gave me a set of oil paints in 3rd grade). I have painted and crafted for over 50 years, mostly in my home raising 4 sons and working in retail and administration. I returned to school at the age of 46, earning a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in 2001. I began quilting in 2016 when I retired from my Administrative position at the University of Texas at Austin. I was searching for a new creative endeavor and happened on “modern” quilts when I was googling for a new bedcovering. The works of Nancy Crow and Gwen Marsden caught my attention and I wanted to make what they were making. No one in my family quilted or did any kind of handwork so quilting was not something I was familiar with. I took a beginning piecework class at a local quilt store and was hooked. I love making “functional” art. I consider my quilts paintings using fabric as my medium. Currently I am working in my studio, teaching Zoom workshops and presenting Zoom lectures/trunk shows, and travelling all over the world teaching in-person workshops. I’ve even a book on my signature style of improvisational quilting, Dancing With The Wall. My work has been exhibited throughout the United States and is included in private and museum collections. In 2019, I received the Emerging Artist Award at Quilt National, 2nd place finishes at QuiltCon 2019 in the Improv category and in the 2-Color Challenge Category. I was awarded the first place award in the Improv category at QuiltCon 2020 and a third place at QuiltCon 2023. In 2021, I was awarded a Juror’s Choice Award at the Quilts=Art=Quilts Exhibition at the Schweinfurth Arts Center and the “In The Abstract” award in Visions Museum’s Quilt Visions 2021. To add icing to the cake, I have been chosen as a juror for Quilt National 2023. Most recently, I received “Best of Show” for the Q=A=Q Exhibition, Schweinfurth Arts Center and the Japan Prize at Visions Museum’s Quilt Interpretations 2022.

Jane Sassaman

Jane began to quilt in 1980. Since then her exuberant quilts and fabric designs have attracted worldwide recognition. Under the influence of 19th century Arts and Crafts designers, her work is abstracted from nature, but her signature graphic style is totally contemporary. As an art quilter, Jane’s designs are always recognizable for their bold color and graphic style. In fact, her quilt ,“Willow”, was named as one of the hundred best American quilts of the 20th century.

Sandy Shelenberger

Conneaut, OH

Sandy ShelenbergerSandy is an artist and instructor. She specializes in fiber arts, surface design and encaustics. Sandy’s love of sewing and designing came together during a quilting class she took in 1984, where she began to see quilting as an art form and a means of self-expression. She hand-dyes her fabric and uses surface-design techniques such as Shibori, batik, dye-painting, discharge, experimental screenprinting to create her distinctive cloth and patterning. Sandy also works in encaustic medium and looks for ways to incorporate fiber techniques into the wax process. Sandy’s art has been exhibited in regional and international invitational and juried shows across the country. Select exhibits include: Quilt National (Athens, OH 2021, 2005) FACES of Fiber, Estes Park, CO (2022), Visions Art Museum (San Diego, CA, 2018), Woman Made Gallery (Chicago, IL), Ohio Craft Museum (Columbus, OH), Quilts=Art=Quilts at Schweinfurth Arts Center (Auburn, NY), and Fiberart International (Pittsburgh, PA 2013). After working as a Registered Nurse for 33 years, Sandy left nursing in 2014 to pursue her passion. She currently teaches fabric dyeing, Shibori and multiple surface design techniques. She has taught classes at Praxis Fiber Workshop (Cleveland, OH), Chautauqua Institute (Chautauqua, NY), the Dairy Barn Art Center (Athens, OH), the Great Lakes Fiber Festival (Wooster, OH) as well as her home studio in Conneaut, OH.
