Session 1: May 27–31, 2024 (five–day classes, $665)

1. Stitch Play
Instructor: Julie Booth

This is an “outside the box” approach to exploring the potential of basic hand stitches. During class we will play a series of “games” such as rolling dice, pulling numbers out of a hat. These random results will correspond to lists of stitches, verbs, adjectives, and other actions that will help determine approaches to playing with and manipulating stitches. We will stitch “messy” test samplers to explore different concepts and glean information…often resulting in the creation of new stitches or stitch variations. Keeping a record in a journal is part of the process. Julie will also provide a selection of interesting Stitch Challenges based on daily themes. Themes include: Marks and Maps; Action/Reaction: Playing with Stitch Tension, Word Play: Using Adjectives to Determine Format and Stitch Character; Stitch Pairs: Playing with Pattern and Layers. You will create truly original works using the stitch variations developed through play.

2. Joomchi? Why Not?
Instructor: Jiyoung Chung

Joomchi is a traditional Korean art that requires only water and eager hands to rework layers of Hanji, colored mulberry papers, into a new, cloth-like or leather-like textured handmade paper. Joomchi was traditionally used for items such as outerwear and bags. It is not easy to rip or tear. Over time, the surface can become more elegant and aged looking, sometimes taking on the look and feel leather. Joomchi is strong enough to be sewn, painted, collaged or worked into free-standing forms. Participants will have the opportunity to try several hands-on techniques and to become acquainted with Joomchi’s history, practice and role in Korean society. Explore the possibilities for quilts, books, garments, new surfaces for drawing, unconventional body ornaments or sculptural objects. Joomchi can be 2-D or 3D, functional or fine-art-oriented. The possibilities are exciting and endless!

Instructor:
Irene Roderick

Irene will direct you through her method of creating a quilt that she considers to be the act of “Dancing With The Wall.” You will begin by placing a single "component" on the design wall, then build a quilt intuitively and thoughtfully, one step at a time. You will be coached to carefully respond to what is on your wall and not have any preconceptions or plans as you relax and play with fabric. Learn how to let your sub-conscience and your creativity drive you to make a unique expression of your individual aesthetic and process. Relax, play, let it happen and see what comes out. Irene will give tools, tips, instructions and a lot of hands-on individual attention to assist you along the way. Expect to have a fun, challenging and rewarding experience.

6. Totem of Life
Instructor: Jane Sassaman

Let’s arrange some of your favorite characters in nature (animal, vegetable, even mineral) into a colorful and graphic “Totem of Life.” This interlacing appliqued fabric collage can be either vertical or horizontal. Come to class with a chosen “theme” to help organize your ideas. For, example, you could pick “Autumn” as your theme. Your characters could be fall leaves, moths, chrysanthemums and a harvest moon. Or your theme could be Butterflies and Flowers, Ocean Life or even The Planets. Before class, you will collect photos and prints of the characters that are candidates for your composition. From these we will stylize (simplify and exaggerate) each object so they can be made as graphic fabric shapes for appliqué. Your composition will evolve as your shapes begin to “play off” one another. This is a perfect way to learn my appliqué and construction techniques, but also a chance to strengthen your design skills and create a uniquely personal project.

13. Wings & Wedges
Instructor: Jane Sassaman

Appliqué can be MODERN! Let's try some "improv appliqué." We will start by folding and then cutting stabilized fat quarters into simple freeform shapes. These unique shapes will evolve into several small fabric collages. Appliqué collage can be more direct and more flexible than pieced compositions. Portable pre-made shapes allow for more spontaneous possibilities. We will be able to make creative decisions throughout the whole process, from cutting and composing, on through to construction. Add a new technique to your toolbox! You will learn Jane's accessible machine appliqué techniques while sharpening your design and machine embroidery skills.

14. Mixed Media Encaustic: Fiber and Structure
Instructor: Lorraine Glessner

Are you a quilter, weaver or surface designer? Encaustic can enhance fiber in many ways. Lorraine will start with the basics of working in encaustic then share application techniques for color mixing, adding layers and texture, surface manipulation, and the creation of line and pattern. Discover the infinite possibilities of combining encaustic with fiber structures and stitched surfaces such as machine or hand embroidered fabric, quilted or woven fragments, or lacelike forms created from free-motion machine embroidery on water soluble stabilizer. We will experiment with polyester fabrics and Tyvek, stencils, tjanting tools, drawing with horse and human hair, branding with heated metal and wood burning tools. Working two or three dimensionally, you will be encouraged to develop a personal vocabulary and explore current interests. There will be slide discussions about the conceptual use of fiber and encaustic in contemporary art as well individual consultations for each student.

15. Grid Work
Instructor: Katie Pasquini Masopust

Let’s create an abstract quilt structure embraced by the lines of a grid. We will start by doing some quick paintings inspired by photos of your choosing. The photo becomes your guide as to where to put your brush strokes--no painting expertise is needed! We will all be painting on the first day, then you will choose the design you like best. This class is all about working in the abstract and letting go of reality. Everyone will learn two of Katie’s signature techniques: machine applique and “Imperfect Machine Piecing.” Choose one or try both! We will use a grid to break down a complex design into easily sewable 5-inch units connected with thin strips of fabric to create the grid. Each little block will be constructed, quilted, and embellished before being sewn together in a quilt-as-you-go method.

16. Design Camp
Instructor: Pat Pauly

We will spend five days studying how fabrics relate when joined intentionally or randomly. From the basic techniques of manipulating two fabrics, to complex compositions, we’ll take abstract forms using line, shape, and setting and construct larger works by piecing. Encouraging the use of figured or printed fabric (the more graphic the better) Pat offers challenges to define relationships that occur when fabrics are used in combinations, allowing for a dialog that can only be improvisational – or reactive – to the base of the work. It’s a week of camp drills, trading bunks, and fireside sing arounds. Or more realistically – challenges, swaps, and compositional discussion.

17. Shibori: Itajime, Arashi and Stitched Techniques
Instructor: Sandy Shelenberger

Shibori is the Japanese word for ancient techniques used to create patterning on cloth. Let’s try a variety of these, then dye them in an indigo vat to achieve the traditional magical blue coloring. For Arashi Shibori, we will wrap the fabric using a cylinder or rope as the core. Itajime Shibori is clamping and binding the fabric with various shapes. Those shapes remain undyed. We will also create stitched resists using a simple hand running stitch or overcast stitch. These stitches, when sewn in rows or fill-in shapes, become unique designs. The stitches, when pulled up and gathered, will resist the dye. We will learn the basics, then experience the joy of creating your own shapes and visual textures. We will work on cotton fabric and a scarf. You may want to bring a t shirt or item of clothing as well. Sandy will also share her methods for using shibori techniques when discharging and overdyeing black and colored fabrics.

Marks are influential. Marks have meaning. Marks help us communicate. Join in the mark-making fun while creating designs that are uniquely yours. In this multi-day class, you will begin by developing your "mark vocabulary" using ink, markers, paints, hand stitching and diverse mark-making strategies. Next, use your journal of marks to inspire motifs and ideas for repeated patterns. Utilize these exercises to discover effective ways of incorporating your newly-formed visual language into your work. Construct a composition, explore hand stitching, or develop machine-stitched motifs as you explore.

Our collaged layers can include pressed flowers, leaves and other botanicals, photo transfers from simple carbon-based copies as well as experiments with marks and texture using stencils, mesh or doilies. You may also consider incorporating your eco-dyed fabrics and papers as part of a collage or as a ground on which to build a piece. We will bridge the gap between art and craft, content and creation, encouraging you to develop a personal vocabulary by applying these new techniques to your current ideas and methods of working.
